Hey friends,

Happy Memorial Day! I don't have a ton to share with y'all this month, but onward to my top five links of May and a few books I've read/listened to/am in the midst of.

What's new in your world? If you have time, share with me the last thing that made you smile. For me, it was a picture of my brother's puppy on a fluffy new bed 🙂

Cheers,

Maya

  • 🎶 Enjoy some fantastic modern Danish music in Over Tage by Svaneborg Kardyb— makes me want to play the piano again!
  • 🗺️ Where in the USA is this? A game that combines Wordle and Geoguesser, my two favorites— see a picture, guess where it is, and repeat up to 5 times to get as close as you can.
  • 🛳️  Orcas are sinking ships in Europe, and the behavior is spreading.
  • ☕️ Anne Helen Peterson on what the superlative "best coffee maker" and "cooling sheets that will change your life" actually mean about our culture and obsession with productivity.
  • ⏰ Building a scale model of the history of the universe in the Mojave Desert. Worth the 10 minute watch for the impact, visuals, and overall coolness.

Books

  • Black Ops — Ric Prado
    • [The Life of a CIA Shadow Warrior]
    • Somewhat unsurprisingly, a very masculine style of writing, it that's even a thing, with an oversimplified depiction of morality
    • Still, a thrilling and disconcerting insight into parts of the world I never experience
    • The goal of the book seems to be: the movies get the CIA wrong, here's how and why in real life, it's even more badass.
  • Making a Scene — Constance Wu
    • A memoir read by the author— my favorite type!!
    • So far, vignettes of her relationships with several influential figures in her life
    • I so relate to her experience of trying sooo hard to fit in and not "seem" Asian that when people (on TV or real life) did, I'd almost get angry at theM
  • Catch and Kill — Ronan Farrow
    • [Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators]
    • Another sorta memoir, read by the author
    • Gripping, terrifying, heart-wrenching. An account of the reporting of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein… at times, this seemed more like a fictional story than reality. There are so many mysterious and dark forces at play in society… always good to have a reminder of that.
